Learn about the Materials to Opt for the Right Drill Bit Set

Every drilling tool has own nature and perform accordingly. Every type of industrial job needs different drill bit sets to bore a perfect-sized hole with no damage.  Several materials are used to manufacture these bits which come in several shapes and sizes to offer you the best result in terms of precision. Therefore, you need to choose the right tool made up of the right material, which is possible only if you have some basic knowledge of drill bit materials.

Several types of metals are used to design the bits and each metal is capable to solve specific types of drilling requirement. Let’s take an overview of these metals and their respective materials on which you can perform drilling.
Low carbon Steel:

If softwood can be drilled efficiently, then it is only through low carbon steel bits. These bits cost very affordable, but needs to sharpen often for longevity. Don’t try to drill hardwood or metal through this metal’s bit.

High Carbon Steel:

This metal can withstand the high temperature and thus can be drilled into hardwood and thin metal without any frequent need of sharpening. They are almost identical in price with low carbon steel, and hence, is widely used for the purpose of basic drilling as well.

High-Speed Steel:

Bits made of very hard carbon steel is generally referred as high-speed steel bits. These bits are manufactured to tolerate the very high temperature more efficiently than high carbon steel. This is the reason, you can cut a metal on high drilling speed without damaging the surface and the bit. It could be the reason this bit is named High-Speed.

Carbide:

This material is very strong and is perfect for drilling into harder metal. This material can dissipate the heat very well. However, this is fragile and can damage easily. Hence, it is used on the tip of the bit. So, you can use carbide tipped bit to create accurate hole in harder metal surfaces.

Cobalt:

Very thick metals such as stainless steel, cast iron can be drilled efficiently through cobalt drill bit. Cobalt is vulnerable to heat damage. However, the harder material it is, the brittle it is in characteristic. So, use the bits made of cobalt very carefully to avoid any damage.

Drill bits are used to drill holes into a variety of surfaces, from masonry to stone, wood to steel. Hence, you should be very careful in the selection and give proper time to research to find the right tool for your purpose.
